Our Notes & References

Charming large-format edition of Pushkin’s famous poem ‘Gypsies’ first published in 1827, and here illustrated by the Estonian artist Friedrich Ludwig von Maydell (1795-1846), who created the drawings during Pushkin’s lifetime. The text was published preserving all the orthographic features as it was in the second publication of 1835.

A fresh example of this production of good quality, appearing the year of Lenin’s death, just after Russia’s brutal Civil War.

Provenance

Avenir Nizoff (émigré, pianist, who lived in Edmonton, Canada, in the second half of the 20th century, and gathered a large, wide-ranging library of Russian works, especially covering art, history and literature).
