Our Notes & References

Teffi comments on her French translator Denis Roche, and gives indications for translation, mentioning one of her stories, Markita.

Her letter is followed by a note by the recipient, most probably addressed to Roche himself, about translating Chekhov’s letters.

Nataliia Vladimirovna Saint-Jean (Limant-Ivnova (1859? – 1944) was also a writer and translator. She lived in Clamart near Paris, after having lost four sons at the front. She collaborated with Denis Roche (1868-1951), historian, critic and important translator. In 1898 Roche went to Russia, met Tolstoy, Chekhov and Repin among others. He then collaborated with the magazine “Starye Gody”, corresponded with its authors and translated works by Leskov, Turgenev, Chekhov, Remizov and others. He was one of the first in the West to recognise the talent of the young Nabokov and did much to popularise Nabokov’s work in France, completing in particular the first translation into French of “The Luzhin Defense” (“La Course du fou”, 1934).

Dear Nataliia Vladimirovna

I really like Roche’s approach to translation. That’s the only way to translate.

“Pototska-gaechka” means “little seagull” in pomorskii. Markita says “golubenkago” in the sense of “pale-ish”, bluish pale.

I went from (?) to Brides les Bains, pension Belvédère, where I’ll stay for three weeks. And what will happen next – I don’t know. I’ll probably be back by September.

I love Brides. There are mountains, forests and a brook that roars day and night.

I arrived with friends by car. It’s all nice. The only unpleasant thing is that there are many worries and sorrows in my soul about loved ones who are having a hard time…

I send you my warmest greetings.

Yours Teffi

Then the following note, dated “Repin’s 85th birthday August 6th” (ie. 1929):

I would like to send you the little book of “Chekhov’s Letters”. It is small – read it and mark in pencil what needs to be translated, because in my opinion, except for 3-4 letters where his plays are discussed, there is nothing interesting – why waste time and effort – if you don’t use them later.
