Our Notes & References
A lovely illustrated edition of Pushkin’s ‘novel in verse’, a masterpiece of Russian literature. Rarely found in attractive conditin as here.
Elena Samokysh-Sudkovaskaia (1863-1924) was a talented female painter and graphic artist. The quality of her illustrations and the elegant design of the book made this work one of the most renowned sets of illustrations for Pushkin’s poem.
Samokish-Sudkovskaia received her artistic education at the private academy of Jules Bastien-Lapage in Paris and later became a member of “The First Lady’s Artistic Circle”. Her works were exhibited alongside those of some of the era’s most eminent painters, including Ivan Shishkin and Ilia Repin. The designs for Tsar Nicholas II’s Coronation Album (for which she collaborated with her husband Nikolai Samokish, also a celebrated painter) earned her a ‘Highest Favour’ distinction, complete with a medal.
The fine production is due to one of the leading and best Russian presses of the time, Golike & Vilborg. This is the second edition of the work with these illustrations, an almost exact reprint of the first in 1908; the success carried on, with a final edition in 1918, following the revolution.
