Our Notes & References
First edition of these Crimean War observations, from a Russian surgeon. Attractively printed on heavy paper.
Pirogov (1810-81) wrote his letters from the Crimean frontline where he was a chief surgeon in the Russian army. He was a pioneer of the military surgery introducing a new method of care for the wounded. Under his command soldiers with lighter wounds were sent to hospitals away from the frontline, whereas for those with heavy wounds he performed surgery on the spot.
Provenance
From the estate of Avenir Nizoff (émigré, pianist, who lived in Edmonton, Canada, in the second half of the 20th century, and gathered a very large library of Russian works of all kinds, and often rebound his books himself, as it is probably the case here).
