Our Notes & References
Very first anthology of Russian literature in French, published at the dawn of the its Golden Age, when Pushkin was a few months old. A fresh example, pleasantly bound.
An extensive preface details the translators’ aims and explains their literary choices; presenting a collection of classic Russian works to the French public for the first time, they wish to show the extent and the quality of Russian literature, which ‘n’est pas au point de dégradation où on la croit.’ The volume comprises a poem on the Strelitzes by Trediakovskii, ‘le premier poète russe’, some odes by Lomonosov and his important epic on Peter the Great, and Sumarokov’s tragedy Dmitrii the Pretender as well as one of his comedies, The Usurer. The work was translated (and signed) by Manuel Leonard Pappa Do Poulo and Pierre Gallet.
