First edition of this famous work, Akhmatova’s fourth poetry collection – one of only 60 ad nominem copies, printed for Savelii Isaakovich Grinberg, brother-in-law of the publisher, Yakov Blokh, who owned the active Petropolis publishing house. Originally from St Petersburg, but educated at Cambridge before and after World War I, Grinberg became administrator of Petropolis once in Berlin; he moved to Holland in 1932, and settled in England in 1934 where he became a manufacturer.

With a celebrated cover design by Mstislav Dobuzhinskii, a member of Diaghilev’s Mir Iskusstva group of innovative artists.

Binding

Original illustrated wrappers, printed in yellow and black, yapp edges.

Condition

Very faint waterstain to the top corner of a few leaves; wrappers with short tears at extremities and light spotting. A fresh example.
