Our Notes & References

Impressive presentation portfolio given to the Chief Prosecutor at the District Court of Odessa, Vladimir Stepanovich Mikulin, by his colleagues on the occasion of his departure after two years of successful work at the Office. It is evident that the recipient of this portfolio was a distinguished man, highly valued for his professional qualities and admired by his colleagues, as seen from the letter signed by twenty one employees of the Odessa Prosecutor’s Office.

Mikulin (d.1938) quickly progressed through the ranks at the Odessa regional court. In 1894 he was a junior candidate to the Court; by 1909 he was already appointed Chief prosecutor at the Odessa regional court and rapidly became State Counsellor. After the Russian Revolution Mikulin emigrated to Bulgaria, where he served as Chairman of the Union of Russian Judiciaries, before moving to France.

The portfolio also contains Mikulin’s son’s course book for a law course at the Imperial Novorossiiskii University in Odessa for the year 1913-14. The booklet was printed and bound at a local Odessa press. However we couldn’t establish the portfolio binder, nor the maker of the silver plaque.

Ukrainian portfolios of such quality and complete with the original presentation document are scarcely found.
