Our Notes & References
First edition of Khlebnikov’s first book of verse, illustrated by Malevich and Burliuk, published with the help of the Futurist poet Aleksey Kruchenykh in a very productive year for the Russian avant-garde and especially the team involved in this volume.
A member of the literary group Gileia and one of the major exponents of Russian Futurism (and avant-garde in general), Velimir Khlebnikov (born Viktor Vladimirovich Khlebnikov; 1885-1922) developed and experimental ‘trans-rational’ language (zaum), featuring neologisms inspired by the roots of the Russian language and later finely published by Iliazd in his famous Lidantu faram.
Pleasant example, in its original wrappers, of this scarce edition, with just another copy traced at auction outside Russia in recent decades.
Provenance
From the estate of Mikhail Krasnov (European private collector of important Russian literature).
