First complete edition of this renown masterpiece of Russian Silver Age poetry. A lovely example, with the original striking cover by the symbolist painter Kalmakov, echoing Gumilev’s African travels.

The founder of the Acmeist school of Russian poetry, and one of the central figures of the Silver Age, Nikolai Stepanovich Gumilev (1886-1921) wrote these poems in 1918 and intended them to form the first part of a geography anthology; however they became an independent work, celebrating exotic lands, inspired by the poet’s expeditions to Egypt and Abyssinia a few years earlier in 1909 and 1913.

The themes central to Gumilev’s work, such as journeys to distant worlds and cultures, fascination by oriental cultures, and Nietzschean characters, find their fullest expression in Shater. Its twelve poems are organised geographically, spanning from Sinai to Somalia, with the final four dedicated to places Gumilev dreamt of, but never visited.

First published hastily earlier in 1921 in Sevastopol with gaps and textual variations, the collection underwent an extensive revision by the poet for this Revel edition. This expanded version includes additional poems and became the definitive text through which Gumilev’s verses entered literary history. It was printed several months after the poet’s death, from a manuscript he had delivered to the publishing house in June 1921, just weeks before his execution by the Bolsheviks.

Gumilev’s other celebrated poetry collection, Ognennyi Stolp [The Pillar of Fire], was edited and published in the same year. Both works remain among the most significant poet’s literary achievements.
