LAGARP and SEN-LAMBERT [LA HARPE, Jean-François de, and Jean-François de SAINT-LAMBERT]
Poslanie Lagarpa k grafu Andreiu Petrovichu Shuvalovu, o deistviiakh selskoi prirody i o poezii opisatelnoi. S prisovokupleniem razsuzhdenii o sem rode poezii.. [La Harpe's Epistle to Count Andrei Petrovich Shuvalov, about the Effects of Rural Nature and about Descriptive Poetry. With the Addition of Reflections on this Kind of Poetry]
Fine example, uncut, with wrappers, and with bibliophile provenance, of this text of literary criticism written for, and dedicated to, Count Shuvalov by one of the major French writers of the time. Rare, with no copy traced on the market in recent decades (including in Russia).
Fine copy of this large-format scholarly publication, bringing to the public for the first time an Ottoman manuscript kept in the then British Museum, especially remarkable for its detailed account of Constantinople.
TOLSTOY, Lev Nikolaevich [TOLSTOI]
Zhivoi trup. Drama v 6 deistviyakh i 12 kartinakh [A Living Corpse. A drama in 6 acts and 12 scenes]
First separate edition of Tolstoy's play, a large-format quality production, with illustrations. A lovely example, unopened in the charming art-nouveau wrappers. Tolstoy wrote in his diary, "that in A Living Corpse there are notes inspired by Chekhov's work. Such is the secret of artistic creativeness".
An exceptionnal example, uncut, unopened and unbound, of a banned and later destroyed account of Peter the Great's Russia. First edition, rare.
TCHAIKOV, Joseph (artist) and Mendele MOCHER-SFORIM
Dos Kelbl [The Calf]
A fine illustrated production of the Kultur Lige, published in Kiyv in 1919. A scarce Yiddish children book, especially unopened without significant restoration.
First edition of Kruzenshtern's important study of North Pacific languages, in a superb, very unusual example: very crisp, uncut, in plain temporary wrappers and printed on thicker woven paper. We were unable to trace other such large-paper copies. A rare book on the market: only two copies at auction.
Complete set of this unusual war satire, written and illustrated in ancient Russian style. Rare when handcoloured, as here. Only 3 complete copies traced in institutions outside Russia.
Very attractive copy of this significant grammar of the Georgian language, the third such grammar to appear in the West. First edition, complete with its two folding plates, finely produced by the French State press. Uncommon.
A bibliophile's pleasure (and definitely Lifar was one!): an extra-large paper copy of his standard work on Diaghilev, one of 15 ad nominem copies, warmly inscribed to the wife of a leading Russian publisher and bookdealer in Paris. An exceptional example.
GAMEL, I. [Joseph Christian HAMEL]
Anglichane v Rossii v XVI i XVII stoletiiakh [Englishmen in Russia in the 16th and 17th centuries]
A theme rarely researched: the relations between Russia and Great Britain, and here more specifically early English travellers to Russia before Peter the Great. First edition of this scarce study.
BERDIAEV, Nikolai Alexandrovich
Konstantin Leontiev. Ocherk istorii religioznoy mysli [Constantin Leontyev: Essay from the history of Russian religious thought].
An excellent, unopened example, in original wrappers, of the first edition of this work where two important Russian thinkers meet.
