Our Notes & References

Altmann’s celebrated and beautiful portrait of the great poetess (both born the same year in 1889), here in an unusual small format printed by one of the best presses of Russia at the start of the century – in the midst of WWI and just the year before the Revolution. Printed just two years after having been painted, and sold to benefit the charity organisation Obshchina Sv. Evgenii.

The card states on the front that the original painting is, at the time in 1916, in the collection of the great St. Pëtersburg art collector Arkadii Veniaminovich Rumanov (1878-1960); it is now in the Russian Museum.
