Fine example of this popular work, with a very decorative publisher’s cloth binding and Karazin’s original text layout, integrating his characteristics drawings with the typographical text. A Russian-Ukrainian military officer, the talented Karazin (1842-1908) reached fame through his painting, writings and book illustrations. He participated in particular in the illustration and design of the 1883 coronation album of Alexander III.

Provenance

Avenir Nizoff (a pianist, who lived in Edmonton, Canada, in the second half of the 20th century, and gathered a large, wide-ranging library of Russian works, especially covering art, history and literature).

Octavo (28 x 19 cm). Half-title, title, dedication leaf, 159 pp.; engraved portrait of the author, 8 lith. pl. with tissue guards, numerous illustrations in text.

Binding

Publisher’s blue cloth binding with colourful stamping on spine and upper cover.

Condition

Lower cover partly stained, binding slightly rubbed at extremities, otherwise fresh.
