Scarce émigré edition illustrated by one of the most famous Russian book illustrators and designers of the early 20th century, and featuring his typical and lovely ornaments.
The book was originally published in 1914 and several poems with Chekhonin’s pictures were reprinted in Maxim Gorkii and Kornei Chukovskii’s juvenile annual “Elka” [Christmas Tree] (1918). An abridged second edition was later published by the Soviet Gosizdat in 1928.
Maria Moravskaia (1890–after 1947) was from Polish origins and an active participant in the liberal-democratic movement in Russia before the Revolution. After settling in Saint Petersburg, she quickly joined the literary circles with the support of Maximilian Voloshin and Zinaida Gippius. In 1911 she was accepted into “The Guild of Poets” (Tsekh poetov) just after its founding by Nikolai Gumilev and Sergei Gorodetskii.
In 1917 Moravskaia emigrated to the USA, for some time living and writing in Florida. Information about her last years and death is contradictory: according to some sources, she died in 1947 in Miami, but other sources bring her to Chile, where she would die after 1958.

Small marginal tear to a few leaves; spine a bit discoloured, covers a bit rubbed and soiled.
A great example of this lovely production: one of 10 copies on 'papier japon', with a supplementary print, loose and inscribed by Lebedeff.
