Our Notes & References

An excellent, unopened example, in original wrappers, of the first edition of this work where two important Russian thinkers meet.

The conservative Russian philosopher Konstantin Leont’ev (also Leontiev, 1831-91) gained fame advocating closer cultural ties between Russia and the East in order to oppose the catastrophic egalitarian, utilitarian and revolutionary influences from the West. Berdiaev (also Berdyaev, 1874-1948), himself one of Russia’s most famous thinkers, emphasizes in the first lines of his work that “Konstantin Leont’ev was an exceptional and unique person, and to love and appreciate him would require a special predilection”. In the chapters that follow, Berdiaev explores his predecessor’s complex character in conjunction with the uniqueness of Russian philosophical tradition.
